New Link Us Module
Posted by TheGhost Fri Apr 28, 2023 8:23 pm

Module Name: Link Us
Contributor(s): TheGhost "Ernest Allen Buffington"
Author: DarkForgeGFX
Version: v1.0.0
Core: PHP-Nuke v8.3.3 <> PHP-Nuke Titanium 4.x.x
Description: To show and administrate several methods of backlinks to your website/portal.

Ernest updated the display on the Link_Us index page. It needed to be displayed properly, which may just be a matter of opinion however I'm OCD and I could not take it any longer. I went ahead and took the time to lay out the table and add a fieldset to the default image section. I have not added any other size link-back images so I have no idea what those will end up looking like. In that event, I am sure I will log in and re-write those areas as well. For now, this website has only the standard default link-back image sizes in use so I will wait till I have to cross that bridge to fix it.

I modified the index.php file located in the "modules/Link_Us/public" directory.

Sincerely,
Ernest Allen Buffington

New Web Links Module
Posted by TheGhost Fri Apr 28, 2023 7:50 pm

Module Name: Web Links
Author: James Knickelbein - Journey Milwaukee (http://www.journeymilwaukee.com)
Contributor: TheGhost "Ernest Allen Buffington"
Version: v1.0.2
Core: PHP-Nuke v8.3.3 <> PHP-Nuke Titanium 4.x.x
Description: Web Links/Resources based on Journey Links Hack

I went in and completely sorted through every line of code and got rid of <center> tags, added h1s, Rewrote a lot of the code, and fixed a few errors that went unseen for years. When writing an Editorial review it would only reflect the admin number and not the admin's name, that is fixed now.

Someone in a rush did not set up the reCaptcha correctly for the add link section.

Added Bootstrap icons in various places to change the cosmetics a little.

Junked all the unneeded braces that were cluttered.

Removed the old expired search engines that have not existed in years and while I was at it I added Google Groups, and Disney and updated the JustLinux Forums search.

New Members List Module
Posted by TheGhost Fri Apr 28, 2023 7:35 pm

Module Name: Members List
Author(s): Lonestar, TheGhost "Ernest Allen Buffington"
Version: v4.0.0
License: GNU General Public License version 2
Core: PHP-Nuke v8.3.3 <> PHP-Nuke Titanium 4.x.x
Description: View Website Member List - Search Website Member List.

This module appeared to be incomplete and broken. The status of the users in the user list did not reflect if the user was currently online or offline. The user's website icon was missing, the user's Facebook icon was missing and the gender icon was missing as well. The members' list was written with a task and a goal to begin with and that was to automate finding and sending a user message or visiting a user's website. We did not add the user's email back to the search criteria of the member list as it is not needed. Send them a private message instead and the web portal will send them an email telling them they have a new message waiting for them.

Added Features:

  • The only users visible in the member's list are members that are not in Ghost Mode
  • Search Engines and website members have no way of knowing just how many website members really exist (Ghost Mode allows visitors to be 100% invisible)
  • Added global Ghost Mode ability for all users
  • Added the ability for admins to see who is in Ghost Mode
  • Added Ghost Mode - You are now invisible when you hide your online status. It will appear as if you do not exist!
  • Added A Profile Pic
  • Added Private Message Icon
  • Added a Website Icon that only shows up if the member has a website listed on their profile
  • Added a Facebook icon that only shows up if the user has their Facebook account listed on their profile.
  • Added New Gender Icons
  • Fixed user's online status in the members list as it was not working
  • Added animated ONLINE image
  • Fixed user's offline status in the members list as it was not working
  • Added animated OFFLINE image
  • If the person has marked themselves hidden on their profile, only admins can see them in the member list
  • If a person leaves the Location field blank it defaults to The Interwebs

Ernest Allen Buffington

GitHub Helps Clueless Coders Go Open Source
Posted by TheGhost Tue Jul 16, 2013 7:24 pm

GitHub has become one of the most important places for open source software developers to publish code and collaborate on projects. But, ironically, most projects hosted publicly on GitHub aren't technically open source. The company is now taking steps to change that.

GITHUB has become one of the most important places for open source software developers to publish code and collaborate on projects. But, ironically, most projects hosted publicly on GitHub aren't open source, at least according to the letter of open source law.

Aaron Williamson, a lawyer specializing in open source issues, analyzed over 1.7 million public GitHub code repositories earlier this year, and of these, only 14.9 percent had clearly specified an open source license, as reported by The Register.

Developers sharing code publicly on GitHub agree to a terms of service that allows other users to view and copy code, but if a license isn't explicitly chosen, other developers won't have the right to actually change or redistribute the code. According to the definition set by the Open Source Initiative (OSI), a license isn't considered open source unless it grants users permission to not just view source code but also modify code and distribute their changes.

GitHub, however, is taking steps to address the issue. Users are now prompted to select an OSI approved open source license when they create a new code repository on the service. Users aren't forced to select a license, but if they select "No License," they'll get a warning explaining that "nobody else may reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from your work. This might not be what you intend."

The change is a huge reversal for GitHub, says James Governor, co-founder of the IT industry analysis firm RedMonk. "Something they said was unnecessary and not their role, is now apparently necessary, and part of their role," he says. "Pragmatism wins. Customers win. But 22 year old software developers may be confused."

To reduce confusion, GitHub prompts developers to select only from a small list of licenses, and has built a site called choosealicense.com to explain the differences between them.

Williamson thinks the change is a good thing, but he isn't sold on the execution. "Just including the option will encourage developers to consider licensing from the outset of their projects, and leave fewer new projects in license limbo," he says. But he also says that GitHub's education program is too simplistic.

"With such a short list, their choices can't help but appear rather political: MIT over BSD, GPLv2 over v3 (or AGPL), and an emphasis on permissive licenses," he says. GitHub includes links to a few other licenses, but it's still a short list relative to the myriad options available. "Community organizations like the Free Software Foundation, the Open Source Initiative, and the Software Freedom Law Center have been working to educate developers about the available license choices for a long time; if GitHub wants to get involved in license education, it should consider reaching out to these organizations and to the community."

By "permissive licensing," Williamson is referring to software licenses, such as the MIT, BSD and Apache licenses that allow developers and companies to include open source code in non-open source products. This stands in contrast to "copyleft" licenses, such as the GPL and AGPL, which require developers to release any changes they make to the code under the same license. GitHub's emphasis on permissive licensing likely reflects a general shift towards these licenses in the open source community.

And there's another challenge for opens source licensing. "Of course, while this is a good step toward improving license disclosure among GitHub projects, it won't guarantee accuracy," says Williamson. For example, it's possible that not every piece of code used in an open source project will use the same license. For instance, a project using an MIT license may include some code from a different project that used an Apache license. The use of multiple licenses needs to be communicated to developers that want to modify and redistribute the project. But Williamson notes that this problem isn't specific to GitHub, anyone incorporating open source code from other projects has to deal with this.

Regardless, this is a step in the right direction for GitHub.

This is another example of people abandoning their projects. We have taken over and will update all the code and probably add features. There is a lot of room for improvement and the project almost seems like it was abandoned in the development stages early on.

The OpenSource community has taken over the development of Flash rendering and as we said, there is absolutely no way to stop the world from creating new Flash movies and Games, and it will continue to do so just like before.

Adobe choked a lot of people whose sole corporate incomes involved the use of Flash and by doing so a few went out of business or bankrupt.

We say shame on you Adobe you should know better.

Adobe bought Macromedia and even with their business experience did not have what it takes to keep it going.

Adobe has been known to buy companies just to horde them and destroy them. In their effort, they shut down Fireworks and fired a lot of employees that depended upon the income they made managing the project.

They also fired all the people involved in managing Adobe Flash Professional.

Adobe is a company that is full of greed and transformed its corporation into a monthly cash cow.

They take advantage of end users by charging monthly fees.

We say when you buy something it is yours and you own it. They should have let us have updates for free after we purchase something.

Adobe is the poster child for greed and they started by charging people monthly fees to use Adobe PDF.

They are a big company and we need their services but the sad thing is they are destined for failure. When you screw over the folks that made you what you are today, it will only be a matter of time before the OpenSource programming world destroys them. You can't stay in business when you screw your community buyers.

This is what happens when you let some youngin who is still wet behind the ears make broad decisions like getting rid of Flash, and or Fireworks.

They still have time to do the right thing and stop robbing their end users but the likelihood of that happening is very grim.

We only wish we knew who was directly responsible so we could make them a nice meme.

Adobe said "Oh we retired Flash" like as if after we all bought their software they had the right to say we can't use it anymore. That in the short term is theft and they robbed the people that put them in the position they are in today.

We all gave them the money that they used to cripple and destroy Macromedia. In the end, the OpenSource communities will cripple and destroy Adobe...

We all know that Microsoft led the way with its corporate greed. Microsoft knows if you make the wrong people mad it can cost you. Microsoft could have cared less and they led the way for others to start charging monthly fees and upgrade fees.

All we can say is enjoy the fact that we are bringing flash back. A lot of programmers who spent over a decade learning to program with ActionScript will probably be skeptical and they are still wandering around with the bad taste in their mouth of Adobe really sticking it to them. It's okay you can start to design new things and yes we have your back now there will never be a way for Adobe to say "Oh we retired it". Adobe is shrinking even as I type and it's their own fault.

Ernest Allen Buffington

New Google Site Map Module
Posted by TheGhost Fri Apr 28, 2023 7:04 pm

Module Name: Google-Site-Map
Author: TheGhost "Ernest Allen Buffington"
Module Version: v2.0
Last Updated: November 21st, 2022
Core: PHP-Nuke v8.3.3 <> PHP-Nuke Titanium v4.x.x

The original sitemap was an abandoned project and idea, not by me but by whoever was working on it initially. The new one is awesome and works great. I'm not sure people really understand how important this little module is. Contrary to popular belief, this is an important part of being found on the internet. The class.sitemap.php file can be found in the includes/classes directory.

I used some of the old code, not much just a few lines here and there, and the old sitemap's admin panel is the same.

This uses sitemap 0.9

The new Google Site Map Generator works better than just about anything I have seen. You will need to delete the old sitemap.xml file in the root directory of your portal/website as it is no longer used. The new sitemap.xml file is generated in the xmls/sitemap folder. This is not the file you tell Google to look at.

You will need to point Google to your sitemap-index.xml file which resides in that very same directory.

You will do this by telling Google where the file is like so https://yourwebsite.com/xmls/sitemap/sitemap-index.xml

You can do so by going here https://search.google.com/search-console?resource_id=sc-domain:yourdomain.com

I used a fast and lightweight class for generating Google-Site-Map XML files and index of sitemap files. Written in PHP and uses XMLWriter extension (wrapper for libxml xmlWriter API) for creating XML files. XMLWriter extension is enabled by default in PHP 5 > = 5.1.2. It will split items into separate files if you have more than 50000 URLs. (In benchmarks, 1.000.000 URLs were generated in 8 seconds) The version we are using is a slightly modified version of the original.

The Sitemap class is now added to a SitemapPHP namespace.

New Updates

  1. Removed font declarations
  2. Updated Icon layout
  3. Updated Table layout

Sincerely,
Ernest Allen Buffington
